Books vs other information sources!!
Consuming content from various sources is the new normal in today's world. The internet is flooded with interesting videos, podcasts, social media posts, blogs, articles, and so on, which not only give us valuable information but also keep us engaged for long hours. But can it replace books?
Books, be they paper books or e-books, are man's best friends in the sense that not only do they provide us with loads of information, but the process of reading also contributes to our physical and mental well-being in innumerable ways, which perhaps watching videos cannot meet. Why Books??
- Reading books has long been considered a mental exercise. It is actually a form of meditation because when you read, you totally immerse yourself in the topic, often imagining yourself in place of the characters and doing a sort of role-play in your mind. This contributes to reducing stress levels, blood pressure and heart rate, as you get cut off from all the disturbing thoughts and activities going on around you.
- Through books, you can acquire knowledge related to events, history, innovations, problems and solutions, and more. Thus, books feed your mind with unlimited facts and information that prove to be a source of great ideas, awareness, and empathy.
- Reading is a brain-stimulating activity that helps control various brain-related illnesses, like dementia, which leads to a decline in the ability to perform daily routine activities. Reading keeps your brain active and focused, improving memory and concentration. This, in turn, keeps stimulating our minds toward analytical and critical thinking.
- Here, it is equally necessary to point out that a good and healthy brain creates awareness regarding our surroundings so that we are compelled to analyse situations from different angles and ask questions and clear doubts that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
- Since we typically read books at our own pace, we get the time of reflect on what we are reading, comprehend and compare it with other similar situations and bring out patterns and connections that contribute to self-awareness and creativity.
- Not only the above, when we read, we actually learn how to articulate and connect the words inside our mind and put them in writing in a properly structured manner, which is easy to understand. In simple words, reading removes writer's block, which is a common term used to describe the point at which a writer fails to put down their thoughts into written words and they are unable to proceed with their writing.
Conclusion
Thus, the habit of reading has a huge and rather unlimited return on investment. You invest your time and money in a good book, and what you get in return are things that no one can ever take away from you, and that is knowledge and peace of mind. You can speak confidently and put across your point with great clarity since now you are well ahead of your peers in terms of knowledge, vocabulary, critical thinking, and ability to focus. You also learn to analyze human behavior and body language, which helps control emotions and understand things from others' perspectives.
So, keep reading, and just as Elon Musk has said, " Read more to identify your true inherent skill, which you also enjoy doing in real life."
